Diabetic Eye Disease
Diabetic eye disease refers to a group of eye problems that people with diabetes may face as a complication of diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy is the most common diabetic eye disease and a leading cause of blindness in American adults.
Over 5.3 million Americans age 18 and older have diabetic retinopathy, an estimated 2.5 percent of this population group. After age 40, the number increases to 3.4 percent. However, about half of adults whose diabetes puts them at risk are unaware of the disease and are more likely to have vision loss.
